Update on Penny Availability

Grand Rapids, Michigan – December 29, 2025

Due to the U.S. Treasury's decision to end penny production, the Federal Reserve has stopped supplying the penny in many locations nationwide. As a result, our ability to fulfill penny-related requests may be impacted.

To ensure fairness and continuity of service, effective Monday, February 2, 2026:

Cash Transactions

Non-Customers
  • Cash Advances or Check Cashing only
  • Cash totals rounded to the nearest nickel
  • Rounding applies only to the final cash total
  • Electronic payments remain exact
  • Penny requests from non-customers or collectors cannot be honored
Customers
  • If exact change isn’t available, the remaining cents will be credited to your account
    • Example: Check for $60.23 → $60.20 in cash, $0.03 deposited
  • Cash deposits credited for the exact amount
  • Penny change orders will be limited to two rolls per customer per day

What You Can Do

We encourage consumers to recirculate coins—check your home, car or coin jars and bring them into your preferred Union Bank location. Rolled coins are accepted at all Union Bank locations. Coin machines are available at our Dimondale, Lake Odessa and Westphalia Branch locations.

Questions?

At Union Bank, we’ll continue to monitor updates from the Federal Reserve and U.S. Treasury and will share guidance as it becomes available. Should you have any questions, please contact us.
